How to identify a suspicious challan message
| Warning sign | Safer response |
|---|---|
| Link uses a misspelled or non-government domain | Do not open it; type the official address manually. |
| Message asks you to install an APK | Delete the file and keep Play Protect or device security enabled. |
| Caller asks for OTP, card PIN or UPI PIN | End the call. Legitimate verification does not require sharing those secrets. |
| Payment recipient is an unexplained personal account | Stop and verify the challan on the official portal. |
| Threat of immediate arrest or account blocking | Do not rush. Independently verify through official channels. |
If payment is successful but still pending
Keep the transaction reference and receipt. Use the official Check Pending Transaction or payment-status option before attempting a second payment. If the status remains unresolved, use the grievance route or official e-Challan helpdesk shown on the government portal.
If the challan appears incorrect
Do not ignore it or pay through an unofficial intermediary. Review the evidence and issuing authority, then use the grievance option or contact the relevant traffic police or transport authority. Procedures vary by state and by whether the matter has moved to a virtual court.
e-Challan FAQs
Can I check a challan using only the vehicle number?
The official portal commonly offers vehicle-number search, but it can request additional identifying details and a verification code.
Is every state challan visible on the central portal?
Coverage and timing can differ. Some state or city authorities use separate authorised systems, so check the issuing authority’s official website when needed.
Should I pay from a link received by SMS or WhatsApp?
It is safer to open the official portal independently and locate the challan there.
Where can I download the receipt?
The official e-Challan site provides payment-receipt and transaction-status services. Keep a local copy after payment.
